The Meaker Family History

Possible origins of the name Meaker

Map of Rame

The village of Maker is very rural in Cornwall but in the Plymouth postal code area, on the west side of Plymouth Sound. The name may have been derived from either St.Macarius, a native of Egypt, who flourished in the 14 century, or from the virgin daughter of a Scottish King, who was martyred at Rheims. In 1943 the parish united with Rame and is now known as Maker with Rame.

Rame

Maker -Cornwall 1878 People from the village of Maker "emigrated" over the Tamar in the 14th century and took the village name as their own - or they were forced to take on their birth village name.

There are many people with the name Maker in Cornwall , however farther east ie. Somerset and Dorset it is Meaker. The name changed to Meaker over the centuries through local dialect and phonetic spelling.
